conservation and tourism development

Coulson Harney’s team of lawyers are at the forefront in East Africa in advising on conservation projects, eco-tourism facilities, land development, wildlife management and conservation, human/wildlife issues, community land use and sharing. We have been involved in the establishment of most of the conservancies on private land and also in conflict resolution between tourism operators and land owners and we act for many of the large worldwide conservation bodies.

Recent Transactions

  • Advised The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy in the acquisition of approx. 28,500 acres of land in Laikipia, Northern Kenya by a third party for the purposes of the permanent preservation and protection of land and wildlife.  The transaction involved due diligence, complex corporate and property structuring, developing a tax efficient conservation model compliant with Kenyan law and included drafting and negotiating lease-back agreements, easements, granting of various options, rights and conservation management agreements.

  • Advising several conservancies on all aspects of land, wildlife and environmental law.  These include: The Northern Rangelands Trust, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Soysambu Conservancy, Borana Conservancy, The Laikipia Nature Conservancy, Sera Conservancy and Amu and Ol Donyo Wuas conservation areas.

  • Advising a client in relation to the establishment of a conservancy in the Maasai Mara area covering approximately 250 land titles of a former group ranch.
